We’re honored and delighted to be the featured book and authors (along with Matthew Cordell) for this month’s Sharp-Schu Book Club meeting on Twitter. Librarians extraordinaire John Schumacher and Colby Sharp host this monthly virtual gathering where librarians and fans get to interact with authors in real time. It’s a really cool thing!

Hope to see you there!
That’s right, our baby is one year old today! It’s been an amazing year. We’ve made some new friends, met a lot of fans, learned a lot. And it’s been very gratifying to see children love our characters as much as we do, if not more!
The great John Schumaker, a champion of children’s literature and graphic novels has posted an interview with us on his Watch.Connect.Read blog to help us celebrate the anniversary.
He’s also doing a book giveaway!
Here’s a little something I found the other day: what might be the very first drawing of what would become our tempestuous redhead. I’m guessing it goes back to the mid-nineties.
Now let’s go have some birthday cake!
I had a great time yesterday meeting 3rd- 5th graders at Bullock School who are part of the Mini Imani reading program in Montclair. They had lots of great suggestions and questions. (“Why is Gaston bald?” ”Can book 2 be about Zubair?”)
Answers: Gaston is bald because that’s how Rafael envisioned him. (Or Maybe Raf couldn’t pick a hairstyle. Raf?); Book 2 is not going to be totally about Zubair although he’s going to play a big part in it. Rafael and I do have an adventure we’d love to tell with Zubair but that’s probably a ways off.

We’re hard at work on the sequel to Giants Beware! (tentatively titled Belly Of The Beast), and wanted to share a few studies and designs for some new characters.
These seven lovelorn princes show up in Mon Petit Pierre to court Marie. Marie has no interest in them, of course, but her mom has different plans for her.
The kids make a human staircase for Claudette and Valiant.
We introduce an army of gargoyles in book 2. These sketches are based on reference from medieval cathedrals.
The final designs for the book will be a bit simpler and probably less scary. I’ll post more designs soon, including Azra the dragon and her offspring!
